Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy

Child and adolescent psychotherapy – Zeynep Ak Eğilmez, Clinical Psychologist

Child and adolescent psychotherapy is a field of psychology that follows the mental, cognitive, social and emotional development of children and adolescents aged 0–18 and addresses the current and potential difficulties they face during this period. This form of therapy is carried out with an approach tailored to the individual’s stage of development.

In child and adolescent psychotherapy, the therapist decides on the type of psychotherapy to be used in the initial assessment session. Various therapy methods can be applied according to the individual’s needs. In some cases, medication and psychotherapy may be used together; such a combination is preferred especially when clinical findings need to be supported.

Parents’ active participation in the therapy process is very important. When parents understand the difficulties their child or adolescent faces and play a supportive role, therapy becomes more effective. Parents’ guidance makes it easier to integrate therapy into the child’s life and helps achieve healthier results in the long term.

In addition, it is crucial for the success of therapy that the child or adolescent feels comfortable, safe and understood with the therapist. This safe and supportive environment enables the child or adolescent to reach the goals of therapy. As a result, they perceive both themselves and their surroundings in a healthier way and develop a strong psychological foundation.
